Thomas A. Gamble was mayor of Savannah from 1933 to 1936 and from 1939 until his death in 1945. He was a reporter and City Editor of the Savannah Times and Savannah Evening Press from 1889-1898; and the founder, editor, and publisher of the Weekly Naval Stores Review in Savannah from 1890-1937. He was known as the "Father of Armstrong Junior College" as he had organized the movement for its establishment. He was a founding member of the Savannah Public Library Board for nineteen years, and was its Chair from 1928-1932. He initiated the construction of the Savannah Public Library on Bull Street with appropriations from the Carnegie Corporation. Upon his death in 1945, he bequeathed many scrapbooks of his published writings to the public library, as well as books and other materials.
