summary: Porter King, lawyer, future judge and Perry County representative to the Alabama legislature, writes a letter dated to October 6, 1856 to his wife Callie King, daughter of Joseph Henry Lumpkin, informing her that he just got back from visiting cousin Mary Ann and reporting that all is well at home. He reports that he won three out of four of his state cases. In addition, Thomas Sanders, a friend of Joseph Troup Lumpkin, was fined $65.00.

Thursday Night
Oct [October] 6th 1856
My dearest Callie,

I have just come up from Cousin Mary Ann's having taken tea with her and have only time to say "alls [all's] well" and your letter with Joes [Joe's] greasy work on it has filled my heart with delight -- I shall [illegible text] into the other flat boat case tonight with a relish -- bless his little paw, I do prize the work so much -- I have been very busy to-day [today] -- tried four state cases and triumphed in three -- I got Joe Troup's friend Thos [Thomas] Sanders fined $65 -- Rhoda is grand ma [grandma] -- Clara had born unto [illegible text] yestarday [yesterday] a girl child --

I finished planting rye to-day [today] --

God bless and preserve my darlings -- good night darling
