Washington D.C. July 4th 1854
Dear Julia ,

The Senate did not adjourn yesterday until after 8 oclock & I then came down to breakfast & found you & Sallie had run away. The Senate was quite hot Wednesday night so after speaking half an hour I sat down in window & got [deleted text: a] the sore throat & horseness [hoarseness] which made me incapable of performing my engagement in N. [New] York & Therefore I did not go with John yesterday evening, My bill passed [added text: Senate] by a vote of 33 to 12. I should like to come [added text: up] To-morrow [Tomorrow] morning, but I am obliged to be in the Senate Monday at 12 oclock & I do not see how I can get back in Time as I Think there is no train Sunday. I will enquire about it Dont [Don't] look for me -- My love to Sallie, & best reports to Mr. & Mrs P. [illegible text]

I am very truly yours
[Signed] Toombs
