Biographical Note
The Alonzo Herndon family was one of the most
prominent African American families in Atlanta through much of the twentieth
century. Rising above slavery, the Herndons reached the heights of business,
education, culture, and community service in a racist society that sought to
subjugate Blacks in every area of life.
Alonzo
Franklin Herndon was born a slave in Social Circle (Walton Country), Georgia,
on June 26, 1858. His mother, Sophenie Herndon, was also a slave, and his
father, Francis Marion Herndon, was his White slave master, who never
recognized Alonzo as his child. Alonzo had one full brother, Thomas Madison
Herndon, and several half-siblings with whom he shared the same father.
Following slavery, Alonzo Herndon began field
labor and eventually sharecropped for three years. By the time he left Social
Circle about 1878, Herndon was twenty years old and had obtained a formal
education of one year. Continuing field labor in surrounding counties in
Georgia, Herndon settled for a while in Jonesboro where he learned the barber's
trade and opened his first shop. Moving to Atlanta in 1882, he eventually
became the city's premier barber. As owner of the Crystal Palace at 66
Peachtree Street in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Herndon served Whites only,
as was required by Jim Crow custom and law. The shop was reputed to be the
largest and finest barbershop in the world. Herndon invested heavily in real
estate, owning more property than any other Black in the city. As the Black
population in Atlanta continued to grow, as Jim Crow increasingly restricted
business opportunities such as barbering that catered primarily t o a White
market, Herndon purchased in 1905 three mutual aid associations that he
reorganized as the Atlanta Mutual Insurance Association (later known as Atlanta
Life Insurance Company). Atlanta Life, which primarily served the African
American market, became Atlanta's leading Black business and one of the largest
Black financial institutions in the country, establishing Herndon as one of the
foremost businesspersons of his era.
Alonzo
Herndon was also Atlanta's leading Black philanthropist, who contributed to
Atlanta University, the Butler Street YMCA, Gate City Free Kindergarten
Association, First Congregational Church, the Leonard Street and Carrie
Steele-Pitts orphanages, and many other charities. Herndon was a founding
member of the National Negro Business League, which was organized by Booker T.
Washington. Herndon was also a founding member of the Niagara Movement, which
was spearheaded by W. E. B. Du Bois. As the first Black civil rights
organization of the twentieth century, it was a forerunner of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Herndon died from heart
disease on July 21, 1927. His fortune was worth at least one million dollars at
that time. Herndon's wealth would eventually contribute millions of dollars to
charitable purposes in Atlanta.
Alonzo Herndon
married Adrienne McNeil on October 31, 1893. Adrienne was born in August,
Georgia, on July 22, 1869, to Martha Fleming, an unmarried slave-born
seamstress and domestic servant. Her father was George Stephens. Adrienne grew
up in Savannah, Georgia, where her mother married Archibald McNeil, a butcher.
Educated at the West Broad Street Public School, Adrienne attended Atlanta
University Normal School, from which she graduated in 1890. She taught at the
Gray Street Public School in Atlanta until her marriage to Alonzo Herndon. By
1895 she began teaching elocution at Atlanta University. She furthered her
education by attending the Boston School of Expression during summers,
receiving a degree in general culture in 1902 and one in public reading in
1903. On January 28, 1904, Adrienne made her drama debut in Steinert Hall in
Boston under the stage name of Anne Du Bignon, reciting all parts of
Shakespeare's
Anthony and
Cleopatra. Due to racial exclusions in the American theater, however,
Adrienne was unable to establish a name for herself as a public reader or to
perform on the legitimate theater stage as she had dreamed. Her greatest
theater contributions were her teaching and her Shakespearean productions at
Atlanta University. Adrienne Herndon also graduated in 1908 from the School of
Dramatic Arts in New York City, furthering her preparation in college teaching
and drama productions. Perhaps her most enduring contribution, however, was her
design of the Herndon family residence. Although untrained in architecture,
Adrienne, who was well traveled and well read, had a keen eye for architecture
and designed a fifteen-room mansion that has been designated a National
Historic Landmark.
Like her husband, Adrienne
was active in community service and philanthropy. She was one of the founders
of the Gate City Free Kindergarten Association. She also performed dramatic
readings to raise funds for social, civic, and educational organizations in the
Black community in Atlanta, Chattanooga, Savannah, Augusta, and other cities.
Her untimely death from Addison's disease occurred on April 6, 1910, when she
was 40 years old. Adrienne had a half sister, Jennie Olive McNeil, and a half
brother Willie McNeil.
Norris Bumstead
Herndon, son of Alonzo and Adrienne Herndon, was born on July 15, 1897, in
Atlanta, Georgia. He began his studies at Atlanta University's Oglethorpe
Practice School and continued at the West Mitchell Public School. He completed
the high school preparatory course at Atlanta University in 1915 and in 1919
received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Atlanta University in 1919. In
preparation for work in his father's business, Norris Herndon, completed his
studies at Harvard University, receiving his master's degree in business
administration in 1921. While a student, Norris worked at Atlanta Life, having
been elected to the board of directors in 1919, and elected as vice-president
in 1921. Following the death of this father in 1927, Norris became president of
Atlanta Life, which under his presidency experiences its greatest period of
growth. Norris Herndon served in this position till 1973.
Norris continued his family's philanthropy,
establishing the Alonzo F. and Norris B. Herndon Foundation in 1950 which has
contributed millions of dollars to such religious, educational, charitable and
civil organizations as the NAACP, United Way, National Urban League, Atlanta
University and the Carrie Steele-Pitts Home for Orphans. The Foundation also
supports the Herndon mansion as a memorial to the good works of Adrienne
Herndon. An avid, self-taught collector, Norris Herndon has substantially
increased the family's collection of furnishings, textiles, decorative objects,
and ancient artifacts. Less than a month before his eightieth birthday, Norris,
who like his father suffered from heart disease, died at his home in Atlanta on
June 15, 1977. Norris had been an only child and never married nor had
children. Two years following Adrienne Herndon's death, Alonzo Herndon married
Jessie Franklin Gillespie, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jessie was born on
September 6, 1871, to Ezekiel, and Catherine Robinson Gillespie, who were
prominent persons in the early development of the Black community in Milwaukee.
Educated in the public schools of that city, Jessie eventually moved with her
family to Chicago where her father continued to work as a railroad messenger on
the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Company. Jessie was a hairdresser and
manicurist in the beauty salon and hair goods store of her half-sister, Mary
Gillespie. Jessie had a full brother, Charles, and a full sister Ida. From the
former marriages of both parents, Jessie had seven half-siblings.
In Atlanta, Jessie Gillespie Herndon was active in
various community affairs, having supported such organizations as the Phyllis
Wheatley YWCA and the Herndon Day Nursery (part of the Gate City Free
Kindergarten Association). Shortly before his death, Alonzo had Jessie elected
to the board of directors of Atlanta Life, making her the first female to serve
on that body. Upon Alonzo Herndon's death, in 1927, Jessie was elected a vice
president, becoming the first female to serve in this position. Jessie was also
prominent socially, having been a member of the Twelve Club, an exclusive
organization for the wives of prominent businessmen and professionals. Jessie
died of a stroke at home on February 1, 1947, at the age of seventy-five. She
had no children.

|
| The Legal Papers, bulking from 1920 to 1952,
document a variety of personal family matters. The Estate of Jessie G. Herndon
documents, bulking from 1946 to 1947, include bank books, correspondence,
estate inventories and distribution lists, letters of administration and
dismissory, newsclippings, tax returns, and a rubber stamp. These materials
document the dispersal of her estate. A deposition, attorney notes, and court
cases document financial suites brought against Norris B. Herndon, chiefly from
1951-52. Also contained in the Legal Papers are financial materials, such as
notes, receipts, and statements regarding matters related to Alonzo F. Herndon,
Mary E. Gillespie, and Jennie McNeil.
