Biographical Note

On November 22, 1950, Norris B. Herndon established the Alonzo F. and Norris B. Herndon Foundation, Inc. The foundation was created as a non-profit corporation to be used exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary and educational purposes. As Norris Herndon's heir, however, the foundation served not only to continue the family's philanthropic activities and to maintain the family residence as a memorial to Herndon's parents, Alonzo and Adrienne Herndon, but also to secure the perpetuity of Atlanta Life Insurance Company.

Since its incorporation, the Herndon Foundation has given to Atlanta's Black community. First Congregational Church, Gate City Day Nursery Association, Greater Atlanta Community Chest, and Morris Brown College are key local institutions and organizations that benefited from the donations. At the national level, the foundation supported the larger cause of Black economic and social development associated with the civil rights movement via contributions to the United Negro College Fund, Inc., and the N.A.A.C.P. Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. Since 1983, most of the Foundation's earnings have been used to support the operation of the Herndon family residence as a house museum.

The late 1960s and 1970s brought two significant events affecting the foundation. The first was the 1969 Tax Reform Act. The original design of the act would have had deleterious affects on the future ownership and control of Atlanta Life by setting limits to the amount of control a foundation could exert over a business and by placing requirements on the spending by organizations for charitable purposes. Through a series of successful lobbying efforts by Atlanta Life officers and its counsel, amendments to the tax act were made that exempted the foundation from payout provisions. The second significant event was the death of Norris Herndon in 1977, when the ownership of his stock in Atlanta Life, the Herndon mansion, and the rest of his wealth passed to the foundation.

The philanthropic legacy of the Herndon family continues through the Herndon Foundation’s charitable contributions and through the operation and maintenance of the family's residence as a house museum, The Herndon Home.
