Type: Minutes | Minute books
Creator: Athens Woman's Club (Athens, Ga.)
Title: Minutes, 1912-1920
Date: 1912-1920
Description: This minute book consists of a combination of handwritten entries and newspaper clippings that document the social activities, civil reform efforts, and philanthropic initiatives of the Athens, Georgia-based Athens Woman's Club between the years of 1912 and 1920. The bulk of this material reflects the club's local interests that served the greater Athens and Clarke County area; however, many entries also show how the Athens Woman's Club served in state and national roles, specifically through its associations with the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The minutes reflect the club's interest and continued engagement in major social reform issues of the Progressive Era, which included the modernization of educational facilities, the improvement of public hygiene facilities and practices, the achievement of equal education and voting opportunities for women. The Athens Woman's Club succeeded in founding the Ella F. White Memorial School in Mountain City, Georgia, raising the endowment capital for the Crawford Long Infirmary, and in campaigning to admit women at the University of Georgia. Also of interest in this collection are materials that establish the Athens Woman's Club's engagement in national political and relief efforts vis-à-vis the First World War, which include participating in the national peace movement, holding Liberty bond drives, adopting French war orphans, forming canning clubs and planting war gardens.
