Description: Porter King writes a letter from the canebrake to his wife Callie King who is in Athens, Georgia. Callie may be visiting her parents during her pregnancy. King writes about how much he misses her and expresses his desire to receive a letter from her. He discusses daily events, such as the state of their garden, his delight in not finding many rats at the demolition of the old smoke house, and their dog Cora's potential to be a good "ratter". King also discusses the current duties of their slaves.
