Date: 1856 Feb. 21
Description: Upon his homecoming to Athens, Georgia, Edward P. Lumpkin writes a letter dated February 21, 1856 to his sister Callie King, daughter of Joseph Henry Lumpkin and wife of Porter King. He notes that their father is still away in Macon, that their sister, Lucy Lumpkin Gerdine, is very sick while her husband, Mr. Gerdine, is away in Mississippi. He reports that Ms. Welch and Narcissa received the presents Callie sent them and that Charles Venable, a University of Georgia professor, has a new wife, the daughter of the ex-governor of Virginia, [James] McDowell. Edward also reports to Callie that Toby Cox shot his sleeping wife and then himself.
