|Description:||The collection consists of correspondence from 1862-1870 to Mrs. Joel (Amelia) Chapin of Enfield, Connecticut from friends of J. Leander Chapin regarding his imprisonment and death at Andersonville Prison, Georgia. The letters discuss the hiring of Amelia Johnson in Andersonville to care for the grave and erect a stone. Johnson's letters contain very descriptive comments about the cemetery and stockade. Also in the collection are three documents concerning death benefits paid to Mrs. Chapin for her son's military service. Letters from Leander's friends who describe his character and death are also included.|

Mrs. Joel Chapin (Amelia) of Enfield, Connecticut wrote concerning her son J. Leander Chapin (d. 1864), who was a private soldier in Company A of the 16th Connecticut Infantry Regiment. He was taken prisoner on April 20, 1864, and held at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He died at Andersonville of typhoid fever on July 21, 1864.
