Description: The collection consists of seven letters written by Daniel M. Reed on patriotic stationary to his friend Mary K. Bull in East Troy, Pennsylvania. Reed is at Beaufort (SC) guarding the ferry and doing picket duty at Seabrook Island (SC). He tells her what war news the soldiers hear, his plans to go out west after the war, his determination to never take the oath of allegiance if captured, and describes the Pocotaligo (SC) battle. The last letter begins on July 4, 1862 in Beaufort but ends in Newport News (VA) on July 18, 1862.

Daniel M. Reed was a Union soldier in Company G, 50th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was killed in action at Chantilly, Virginia, on Sept. 1, 1862.
