| Title: | Letter [with enclosed talk], 1802 Apr. 8, Jackson County, [Georgia to] Josiah Tatnall, Governor [of Georgia], Louisville, [Georgia] / Gen[era]l John Clark |
| Date: | 1802 Apr. 8 |
| Description: | This document is a letter from General John Clark to Josiah Tatnall, Governor of Georgia (1801-1802), dated April 8, 1802. Clark writes to inform Tatnall of a number of families that are currently settled on Cherokee lands across the recently established boundary line marking the border between Georgia and the Cherokee Nation. Clark encloses a copy of a talk sent by the Cherokees to the aforementioned settlers. The talk reminds the settlers that they are trespassing and improving on land that rightfully belongs to the Cherokee Nation and warns that all improvements will be destroyed if they are not removed. It is signed by Cherokee leaders Shoe Boots, Sour Mush, Jobber Sam, Standing Turkey, and Dreadful Water. Clark mentions that the original copy of this talk is accompanied by a copy of the applicable laws and treaty and is being held at Vann's Tavern, owned by wealthy Cherokee James Vann, so that it may be viewed by the settlers to whom it is directed.
