Title: [Deposition of] Nathaniel Howell, 1821 Sept. 6, Greene County, Georgia. [Deposition of] Ann Howell, 1821 Sept. 6, Greene County, Georgia
Date: 1821 Sept. 6
Description: This document consists of two legal depositions, both dated September 6, 1821, from the son and widow of Nathaniel Howell in which they describe the alleged theft of two slaves, named Ned and Sam, and a shot gun in the year 1784. It is alleged that the Creek Indians stole the two slaves and the gun from Wilkes County (Georgia) and took them into the Creek Nation. The younger Howell states that his father demanded the return of the property at the Treaty of Coleraine, between the Creeks and the U.S. (1796). Ann Howell adds that an Indian trader, referred to as Tim Barnett (Timothy Barnard?), informed them that he had seen the two slaves in the Creek Nation and would return one of them to Howell in return for permission to keep the other.
