| Title: | [Letter] 1812 Oct. 13, Department of State, [Washington, D.C. to] David B. Mitchell / Ja[me]s Monroe |
| Date: | 1812 Oct. 13 |
| Description: | United States Secretary of State James Monroe writes to Georgia Governor David B. Mitchell (1809-1813, 1815-1817) on October 13, 1812 in regard to the state of affairs between the U.S. and the Spanish government of East Florida. Monroe informs Mitchell that as a result of recent hostilities committed by American settlers, led by General George Mathews (former Governor of Georgia, 1793-1796) in East Florida, the governor of East Florida has declined to promise protection to those settlers within his jurisdiction. He further reports that the Spanish attacked Colonel Thomas Smith's troops while the possibility of negotiation between Spain and the U.S. was being discussed, and unnamed Indians (ostensibly Creeks and Seminoles) were incited by the Spanish to commit hostilities against the settlers. Monroe believes there is cause to fear that such Indian aggressions will increase. He thanks Mitchell for his service in the East Florida situation and informs him that those duties will be transferred to Major General Thomas Pinckney. Document ID: krc128.
