Title: Letter, 1787 Jan. 14, Cherokee Nation [to] Edward Telfair, Governor of Georgia / John Woods
Date: 1787 Jan. 14
Description: Letter dated January 14, 1787 from John Woods, town of Eastanary (probably Oostanaula), Cherokee Nation to Georgia Governor Edward Telfair relating his failed attempt to treat with the Choctaws. The Choctaws, although friendly, refuse to negotiate with Woods since they distrust the Georgians for breaking promises in the past, and they intend to abide by the treaty they have with the federal government. After meeting with the Choctaw king (Friendchemastubie ?) in Great (Yazoo ?), Woods journeys to congress with a Choctaw chief to deliver talks, and he travels through Chickasaw, Creek, and Cherokee lands, learning that some of the Creeks intend to go to war. Includes an expense report.
