Creator: Davenport, William
Title: [Letter] 1786 Nov. 1, Cumberland [to the] Governor [of] Georgia / William Davenport
Date: 1786 Nov. 1
Description: This document is a letter from William Davenport to an unnamed Governor of Georgia (probably Edward Telfair, 1786-1787), dated November 1, 1786, regarding the continuing difficulties in securing a lasting peace with the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations. Spaniards are aggressively disturbing relations between the Americans and these nations by emphasizing the American desire for Indian land. In addition, Davenport reports that if the Americans do not provide the Indians with supplies in a timely manner, they may lose their friendship altogether as both nations are still very much inclined towards the British. Davenport gives considerable detail relative to the general situation in the Natchez region, mentions Governor of Spanish Louisiana, Esteban Rodriguez Miro, and Alexander McGillivray and the Creek Indians, as well.
