Title: [Letter] 1826 Sept. 16, Department of War, [Washington, D.C. to] George M. Troup, Gov[erno]r of Georgia
Date: 1826 Sept. 16
Description: Letter dated September 16, 1826 from James Barbour, Secretary of War (1825-1828), to Georgia Governor George M. Troup (1823-1827) concerning Troup's intention to survey lands ceded by the Creek Nation in the Treaty of Washington (1826). Barbour informs Troup that the Creeks have transmitted a message to the capital through their agent, John Crowell, voicing concern over Troup's orders to begin surveying the ceded territory. Barbour reminds Troup that, in accordance with the treaty, the Creeks legally retain possession of the land until January 1, 1827, and he advises the governor to desist unless Agent Crowell can reconcile the Creeks to the proposed surveying.
