Description: James Meriwether, United States Commissioner, writes a private letter to Georgia Governor George M. Troup on February 23, 1826 discussing the land ceded by the Creek Nation in the Treaty of Washington (January 24, 1826). Meriwether reports on the reception of the treaty at the capital and proposes means for securing the most land for Georgia by manipulating the wording of the treaty and utilizing certain maps.
