Title: Letter, 1837 Apr. 10, Oak Lawn to Governor W[illia]m Schley, Milledgeville, G[eorgi]a / John G. Polhill
Date: 1837 Apr. 10
Description: This is a letter dated April 10, 1837 from Judge John G. Polhill to Governor William Schley (Governor of Georgia, 1835-1837) addressing the governor's request for a legal opinion of a recent act of the Georgia General Assembly that requires the governor to pay for personal property lost by soldiers while fighting Indians. Polhill discusses the specific wording of the act in great detail and advises Governor Schley to interpret the act conservatively and therefore only reimburse soldiers for property lost under extraordinary circumstances, such as in actual battle or in "immediate pursuit" of Indians.
