| Title: | [Letter] 1799 Oct. 11, Flint River [to] Capt[ai]n Span or Capt[ai]n [John?] Swelley, Montgomery County, Georgia / Timothy Barnard |
| Date: | 1799 Oct. 11 |
| Description: | This is a letter dated October 11, 1799 from Timothy Barnard, an Indian trader who lived amongst the Cusseta Indians, to Captain Span or Captain (John?) Swelley in Montgomery County, Georgia. Barnard reports that he has just returned from a meeting about the Georgia/Florida boundary line and predicts that the line will be finished soon. He discusses the problem of horse-stealing and says that an Indian chief called the Dog Lieutenant had assured Captain Swelley last winter that he and the other chiefs would return any horses stolen by their people. Barnard closes the letter by stating that he is confident that the Indian chiefs in the area are indeed determined to stop the stealing, but he cautions white settlers to guard against the practice as a precaution.
