Description: This is a letter to Elbert Herring, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, from John F. Schermerhorn, dated July 4, 1836. Schermerhorn says that after the Treaty of New Echota (1835) was concluded, he asked local merchants to supply the destitute Cherokees with provisions because they were on the verge of starvation. Schermerhorn requests that the U.S. reimburse these men for their supplies as stipulated by the 18th article of the treaty.
