Title: Confederate Monument, Broad Street, Augusta, Ga.
Date: 1900-1914
Description: Postcard image, circa early 1900s, of the Confederate Monument in Augusta, Georgia. Commercial buildings and electric power lines appear in background. Located in the middle of the 700 block of Broad Street, the Confederate Monument was commissioned by the Ladies Memorial Association in 1875 at a cost of $17,331.35. The monument, which stands approximately seventy-six feet tall, is made of granite and pure Italian marble. The base of the monument features four statues of notable Civil War generals Thomas R. R. Cobb, Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and William Henry Talbot. An inscription on the monument reads, "In honor of the men of Richmond County who died in the cause of the Confederate States." The Confederate Soldiers' Monument was dedicated on October 31, 1878 before a crowd of ten thousand.
