Title: A Southern cotton field
Southern cotton field
Date: 1900-1909
Description: Turn-of-the-twentieth century postcard image of men, women, and children, picking cotton, presumably in Augusta, Georgia. Cotton crops were planted in April and harvested during the months of August and September. Harvesting cotton was an arduous task as each plant had to be hand-picked three or four times each season.

Inscribed on verso: "Augusta, Ga., Dec. 1, 1909, We are beginning, this morning, a new month. It doesn't seem like Dec. but we have the furnace going to celebrate. I have been sewing all my spare time this week, so nothing much exciting has happened. Am looking for a letter this morning. --Lovingly, Ella."

Addressed to Mrs. Caroline M. Mayo, 24 Winter St. Orange, Mass.

Front of postcard: "2378."

Original postcard scanned and described by the Digital Library of Georgia as a part of Georgia HomePLACE: an initiative of the Georgia Public Library Service and GALILEO.
