Title: Art Exhibition at Rich's Department Store, Atlanta, 1962. Three unidentified people looking at art
Date: 1962 June 5
Description: Local identification number: LBCB001-037b

Exhibition of optical art (called "Actinism"), with light "paintings" on photographic paper, artists Francis Oliver and Donald Gray, at Rich's Department Store (First floor, "store for homes"), 1962. The artworks are from Actino Galleries, Inc., at 11 West 42nd St., in New York. The exhibition in New York was originally in 1961 and was briefly reviewed in the New York Times (Nov. 10, 1961, "Food..." section, p. 39). According to the 1962 Lane Brothers Assignment Book (page 120), the 4 photographs in the job were commissioned by Donald D. Gray (spelled "Grey" in NY Times review), the secretary and treasurer of the Galleries. Dan Lane was the photographer. The sign in Rich's home department and in a store window has the text, "Rich's announces the first showing in Atlanta of Actinism, Actino, art masterpieces painted with light by two young American artists, Francis Oliver and Donald Gray, who paint with light in a dark room using the spectrum as their palette."
