In 1951, the Library purchased a major collection of books documenting Georgia and Southern literary history from Atlanta businessman and collector, James Walter Mason. Among the more than 2,200 volumes were first editions of the work of Joel Chandler Harris and a complete set of the Southern Literary Messanger. Text of the bookplate reads: "Atlanta Division, University of Georgia, James Walter Mason Collection. Library Use Only." Bookplate bears the seal of the State of Georgia.
