| Description: | This image is a rendering of General William T. Sherman's foragers, who quickly became known as "bummers" as they raided farms and plantations on their March to the Sea. The drawing shows about ten Union soldiers outside a house in the country. Two are taking items that they have unearthed with a shovel. Several others have crops in their hands. A man emerges from the house and stands on the porch with his hands up in protest. A person looks out a window of the house. The March to the Sea, the Civil War's most destructive campaign against a civilian population, began in Atlanta, Georgia on November 15, 1864, and concluded in Savannah, Georgia on December 21, 1864. |
