| Title: | Bill Cosby, Camille Hanks Cosby, and Johnnetta B. Cole |
| Date: | 1988 |
| Description: | Photograph of Drs. William H. (Bill) Cosby and Camille Hanks Cosby, pictured with Spelman College president Johnnetta B. Cole. The Cosbys donated $20 million to Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1988 for the construction of the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Academic Center, the center for the study of humanities at Spelman. They stand in front of a sign commemorating the building. The Cosby gift also provided funds for endowed professorship in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Spelman College, the nation's oldest historically black college for women, has provided women with access to education since the post-Civil War (1861-65) era. A predominantly residential, private, liberal arts college, Spelman promotes academic excellence in the liberal arts and develops the intellectual, ethical, and leadership potential of its students. |
