[et al.] Five Civilized Tribes--Legal status, laws, etc. Creek Nation Indian land transfers This document dated August 24, 1826 is a record of past legal proceedings of the Creek Nation and the Five Tribes (Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminole) concerning their criminal law. About twenty-two years earlier at Hickory Ground the nations met and decided to share responsibility in enforcing the laws and punishing wrong-doers. A second meeting took place at Tuckaubatchee (Tuckabatchee), and it was agreed that anyone who "spill(s) blood" must be punished and his property may be confiscated. If he resists, his house may be burned and the occupants and property destroyed. Another law (pronounced in council by William McIntosh) was passed, making it punishable by death for anyone to sell the Creek Nation's land without the consent of both the head chiefs and the council. The signatures of many important Creeks appear at the close of the document. William Bowles, Benjamin Hawkins, John Forbes, and Steven Folk are also mentioned. Document ID: cim006.
