<dc:description>This document, entitled "Account of a Battle Axe Taken from an Indian at the Battle of Long Island Flats in 1776," describes the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a tomahawk thought to belong to a Cherokee warrior. The written account was furnished by Alfred H. White along with his donation of the tomahawk to the Historical Society of Tennessee on January 6, 1860. According to White, who received the story secondhand from a Mr. George W. Netherland, the tomahawk is believed to have belonged to a Cherokee man known as "Big Indian". White claims that during the Battle of Long Island Flats (present-day Tennessee), an American soldier by the name of Moore fought with Big Indian and killed him. The tomahawk was found in the vicinity of Moore's combat with Big Indian and believed to have belonged to the warrior because of its large size.</dc:description>
