[Legal document relating to] the 1739 treaty of [James] Oglethorpe with the [Creek] Indians Creek Indians--Treaties Oglethorpe, James Edward, 1696-1785 Indian land transfers This damaged document concerns a treaty (Treaty of Coweta, August 21, 1739) between James Oglethorpe, founder of the Georgia colony, and the Creek Indians, which stated in part that no nation except England had a right to receive or settle any lands that had not yet been granted by the Indians. The document refers to a portion of the treaty that attempts to prevent English intrusion on lands not yet granted. This document also mentions the possibility that the Indians could sell or give away parts of their land to individual English settlers, but due to the condition of the document it is unclear exactly what other restraints are placed on the Indians with regard to the transference of their lands.
