Cherokee Indians--Land tenure Cherokee Indians--Claims Betterments This is a letter, dated December 13, 1824, from Cherokee leader Charles Hicks to Colonel James G. Williams concerning the documentation of Cherokee claims for compensation for property improvements in accordance with treaties made between Cherokee leaders and the United States in 1817 and 1819. Hicks mentions instructions received by Thomas L. McKenney of the Office of Indian Affairs and explains why he has already sent out Cherokee commissioners to collect information relative to the claims. Document ID: pa0225.
