<dc:description>This document is a letter from Major Martin Hardin enclosing a petition directed to Governor of Georgia Peter Early (1813-1815), dated July 26, 1814. The letter explains that, in defiance of the governor's orders prohibiting settlement on Indian lands, Fort James (Wayne County, Georgia ?) has been occupied almost continuously since being abandoned by the U.S. Army. Hardin informs the governor that the local Indians have even been persuaded that the land is not theirs, and therefore, the settlers at the Fort should be allowed to stay. The petition explains the situation of Stephen Bugg and a family named (Unice ?) who have been settled at the fort for some time. The petitioners ask that Bugg and the Unice family be allowed to remain on the Indian land until they have harvested their crops. Hardin indicates that all the settlers in question are people of color.</dc:description>
