Militia--Regulations This is a letter dated January 27, 1836 from Colonel Ossian Gregory to William Schley (Governor of Georgia, 1835-1837) asking if substitutes are allowed in the militia. Gregory points out that some men who would like to serve cannot easily do so because it would force them to leave their businesses to ruin. The contemplated military service is referred to as "subduing" the Indians in Florida, an action probably associated with the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). Document ID: tcc555.
