<dc:description>This document is a letter from Major General Thomas S. Jesup, at the Army of the South headquarters in Tampa Bay, Florida, to William Schley, Governor of Georgia (1835-1837), dated October 19, 1836. Jesup informs Schley that before he left Creek Indian territory, Major Charles H. Nelson proposed raising a regiment of volunteers to fight the Indians in Florida. Jesup indicates his initial hesitation but expresses a newfound interest in the corps since the situation in Florida (probably the Second Seminole War, 1835-1842) has continued through the summer. Jesup requests that Schley issue orders for the organization of this regiment and march them to Tallahasee (Leon County, Florida). This letter is referred to in tcc597.</dc:description>
