An act to authorize certain Cherokee Indians to remain permanently in North Carolina Indians of North America--Legal status, laws, etc. This law, enacted Feb. 19, 1866, allowed the appropriation of funds for the support of the North Carolina Cherokees and authorize them to remain in the state permanently, notwithstanding provisions in the Treaty of New Echota (1835) to the contrary. The copy of the law is accompanied by documents dated Jan. 19 and Jan. 21 that certify its accuracy, signed and certified by R.W. Best, Secretary of State, and Jonathan Worth, Governor of North Carolina (1865-1868). Document ID: wtp143.
