Public Square, Area 5

The film clip listed below captures tornado damage on the east side of the Public Square along the South Bradford Street frontage beginning with W.R. Hughes Jewelry store and ending with Pruitt-Barrett Hardware store. Eyewitness accounts reported seeing two separate tornados converge before entering the south side of the business district and traveling east through the Public Square on the morning of April 6, 1936. Nearly every building on the Public Square suffered extensive damage; however, due to the magnanimous effort of thousands of relief workers, most stores along Bradford Street were able to reopen for business in the days and weeks following the great disaster.
