Public Square, Area 6

Listed below are film clips showing damaged storefronts on the south and east sides of the Public Square in downtown Gainesville. On the morning of April 6, 1936 Eyewitness accounts reported seeing two separate tornados converge before entering the south side of the business district and traveling east through the city's Public Square. Nearly every building on the Public Square suffered extensive damage; however, due to the magnanimous effort of thousands of relief workers, almost every store along West Spring and South Bradford Streets was able to reopen for business in the days and weeks following the great disaster.
