Boolean Connectors (and, or, not)
Boolean Connectors (and, or, not)
CONNECTORS: AND
- AND narrows a search. Use it in the "Search " box. For example:
computers and space

The dark grey area represents records containing
both terms. The search would find records such as:
- Computers weave materials for the space age ...
- Apples in space ...
- Apple II computers and space travel ...
- NOTE: Do not substitute an ampersand (&) for the word "and."
CONNECTORS: OR
- OR broadens a search. Use it in the "Search" box. For example:
lemons or oranges

The dark grey area represents records containing
either term or
both terms. The search would find records such as:
- Bitter lemons.
- Wild oranges.
- Oranges & lemons.
- NOTE: When using the OR connector in conjunction with the AND or NOT connectors, parentheses should be used to "group" search terms to ensure correct search results. For example, a search for: parents and daughters or sons might retrieve items about "sons" without any reference to "parents." However, a search for: parents and (daughters or sons) would retrieve only items on "parents and daughters," "parents and sons," or "parents and both sons and daughters."
CONNECTORS: NOT
- NOT eliminates terms from a search. Use it in the "Search" box. For example:
stocks not bonds

The dark grey area represents records
without the second term. The search would find records such as:
but not:
- How to buy foreign stocks and bonds.
... therefore, use NOT with caution!
