Search Types

The Vanishing Electonic database provides two searching Methods to allow users to select the method that best fits their search criteria. Each searching style has the ability to truncate when searching by use of the asterisk (*) character.

  • Basic: Used to search a word or phrase. You will need to choose whether your search should include all the terms in the search box or any of them. You may specify what part of the record you'd like searched.
    • For information about using connectors, and and or, see the help screen AND/OR/NOT.
    • For information about the searchable fields in the database, see the searchable fields help screen.

  • Precision: Use to search multiple areas of the descriptions at once. For example, specify where in an image's description a certain word or phrase appears using connectors. For example, one could search for images related to cotton in Dublin, Georgia by searching for the keyword "cotton" and "Dublin" in the city field.

    • For information about using connectors, and, or, and not, see the help screen AND/OR/NOT.
    • For information about the searchable fields in the database, see the searchable fields help screen.
The precision search also permits limiting results in the following ways:

by City: To limit your search to images associated with a specific city, enter the appropriate term in the corresponding search box.

by County: To limit your search to images associated with a specific county, enter the appropriate term in the corresponding search box.

by Date: To limit your search to documents created within a specific date range, replace the dates shown with the desired ones. To limit by a single year, put it in both boxes. If the default values are not changed, all of the documents will be searched.

by Type: To limit your search to a specific type of original image, select the appropriate checkbox. Image types include photograph, painting, engraving, etching, lithograph, drawing, daguerrotype, ambrotype, tintype, stereograph, and postcard. The majority of the images found in the database fall into the photograph category.
